Job Description

• Responsible for monitoring the continuing relevance, appropriateness and effectiveness of all active clinical decision support tools, rules and alerts, and when found lacking to coordinate required modifications.
• Works with IT and Pharmacy staff to understand system programming requirements, capabilities and limitations. Implements requested orderings and decision support tools in the CPOE system.
• Leads and coordinates CPOE process as it relates to order maintenance, rules, alerts and decision support programming (dosing, renal calculations, weight-based ordering, etc) and other clinical system enhancements.
• Determines operational needs and information processing options as it relates to the medication use process. Communicates to medical, pharmacy, nursing and IT staff with regards to the implementation of new items or modifications to existing clinical decision support tools.
• Reports monitoring activities associated with clinical decision support tools to appropriate UMMS quality improvement committees in support of JCAHO accreditation requirements.
• Leads highly complex analysis, design, development, testing and support services for assigned application applications.
• Provides highly complex application support and guidance to end users and provides technical guidance to less experienced personnel. Serves as point of contact for resolution of complex application problems. Able to quickly assess problems and identify resolutions.
• Prepares written documentation of various types; application documentation, analytical reports, functional specifications, training manuals, status reports, etc. Creates, evaluates and instructs/teaches other analysts.
• Leads the designing for each application assigned, under the control of the change management application and user development request.
• Prepares and validates complete applications documentation for operations and sets programming specifications for user departments. Assist in the development of departmental policies and procedures as they relate to the use of clinical applications.
• Conducts and/or participates in in-service and various educational programs for professional development. Orients, mentors, and transfers knowledge to staff.

Candidate Profile
• Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacology is required. Masters in Pharmacy or above is preferred. Licensure by the Maryland State Board of Pharmacy is required. Additional certifications may be required.
• Experience working in a Pharmacy healthcare environment is preferred.
• Five (5) years progressively responsible experience in pharmacy information applications, including one year performing programming or applications analysis, or equivalent, is required. Previous experience in leading a project and/or team required.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacology is required. Masters in Pharmacy or above is preferred. Licensure by the Maryland State Board of Pharmacy is required. Additional certifications may be required.
• Experience working in a Pharmacy healthcare environment is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Knowledge of changing scientific and biomedical evidence, a dynamic medication distribution system (being altered to maximize safety and efficiency using various technology and human resources), and maturing technology (of the CPOE system itself).
• Knowledge of health care management, administrative and operational principles and practices, including The Joint Commission regulations and laws pertaining to use and dispensing of medications and related devices.
• Able to lead and teach application functionality, design standards, process changes to the end user community and train the trainer.
• Makes recommendations regarding the integration/relationship between and among organizational applications.
• Effective customer service skills, with the ability to work with all levels within the organization.
• Ability to lead and teaches a project team of analysts, end users and consultants skills required to coordinate daily activities, delegate responsibilities, tasks and review/validate work.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary to advise and consult with user personnel and make formal presentations of project findings and recommendations.
• Able to teach application functionality, design standards, and problem solving tools.
• Excellent organization skills; demonstrates confidence and creativity.
• Adheres to applications security and control procedures in accordance with departmental, vendor standards and regulatory bodies. Makes recommendations as necessary.
